  School Closures

This is the 20th year of promoting Environmental Education through the An Taisce, Green Schools Programme in St Oliver's Primary School.   The Theme was " Global Citizenship , Food and Biodiversity".

Over the 2 years we grew a variety of fruit and vegetables in our school garden.  We had great fun planting and experimenting with crop rotation in our beds and digging up the potatoes and onions in the Autum time.  We celebrated the Autumn harvest with our multi disciplinary classes making apple and blackberry jam, putting the kitchen kit given to us by An Taisce to good use.  They also churned their own butter and had it on slices of toast with jam.  Delicious !!

Fifth Class made vegetable soup using the vegetables and herbs from the garden.  Everyone followed the recipe and cut up all the vegetables etc with supervision.   We all tasted it and loved it.  One of the infant classes went on a visit to the KASI Gardens adjacent to the school where they say pumpkins growing and tall sunflowers.  They even got to feed the chickens .  All classes went on nature walks around the school and throughout the National Park where the children experienced biodiversity first hand.

Amazing artwork and projets throughout the school were so exciting for the children.   One class had a bird feeder where they observed the birds feeding everyday and they presented their results digitallty .   Other classes saw the birds feeding in different locations around the school .  We also have many nest boxes in our arboretum and in sheltered stands.  Our outdoor classroom was used by all classes.

Our motto was " So Grow today and Eat Tomorrow".
